Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Visual FX

Joe Letteri has worked on every major sci-fi film that's hit the cinema's over the past 20 odd years. Jurassic Park, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings, Avatar, X-Men- The Last Stand, The Hobbit, Planet of the Apes.. the list is endless.

What started as a fascination with digitally created worlds in teenage years, after watching movies like Star Wars, Letteri learned the craft, quickly climbed the ranks and joined WETA to become Senior Visual Effects Supervisor. Before long, he was on James Cameron's speed dial, whenever "Jim" needed a tidal wave for his next movie.

For every movie Letteri and his team work on, new software has to be written, because what they're doing, "usually hasn't been done before". Groundbreaking visual effects were a big part of why all the aforementioned films were roaring successes and have become classics.

Most recently for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, state of the art software and technology combined with the extraordinary performance of Andy Serkis as Ceasar provided the perfect counterpart to a riviting script, making an Oscar nomination a no-brainer.

Despite numerous Oscar nominations and four wins throughout his career, for Letteri, "a nomination is still exciting".
